It has taken two years to organise to arrange for the two conservators, Isabelle Waters (project leader) and Lisa Nolan from Museum and Art Gallery of the NT.
Thanks go to not only to the conservators for their patience and to the many dedicated volunteers who contributed to this restoration, but to the those who sponsored the project.
Grants were received for Heritage NT, the National Trust of the NT and from MAGNT.
The Anglican Diocese of the NT with Bishop Greg Anderson and the Anglican Parish of Alice Springs (Rector, Rev. Kristan Slack) have been greatly supportive too.
Much support has come from local businesses, Emma Murray (photographer), Jenny Schoellkopf (Bellette Media), Brian Shearn (Signmaster), Dave Fendt (Kennards Hire) and from the work team with the Department of Community Corrections and supervisor John Lush.
The mural is now displaying its vibrant natural colours like it first displayed when first painted in 1958. Congratulations to Jose Petrick for her long term commitment to this project and her inspiration is facilitating the restoration.
Not only does the chapel have the Robert Czako mural but it is is regularly used by an emerging Christian community called Streams in The Desert, it is a consecrated place of worship.
Lastly I wish to acknowledge publicly those past residents of St Mary’s Hostel who lived on the site from 1946 to c. 2009 as I respect the traditional owners past, present and emerging, thanking those with us for their encouragement of this project.
Reverend Brian Jeffries
Assistant Priest, Anglican Parish of Alice Springs
