Harold Furber (pictured) and Owen Cole, Chair and Deputy Chair of the Steering Committee of the National Indigenous Culture Centre, describe as “tragic” the unnecessary division caused by the proposed compulsory acquisition of the Anzac Oval site. The solution is to co-locate the gallery with the culture centre on the Desert Knowledge Precinct.

"It’s why you come in here to a council meeting, to listen, so we’re aware of all these things that are happening. You just don’t treat people as ... stupid!” Brenda Shields was among those venting their frustration over the Town Council's high-handed actions last night. KIERAN FINNANE reports.

“If it’s going to have credibility ... it’s got to be led by Indigenous people" and “We’re going to do it the right way ... not from the top, but coming from the bottom up.” Owen Cole and Harold Furber updated the Town Council on a National Indigenous Cultural Centre for Alice Springs, a project quite distinct from the government's proposed art gallery, in focus and process. KIERAN FINNANE reports.

The National Indigenous Cultural Centre will be “community-led", “working in reverse” to the government’s process on the National Indigenous Art Gallery: the criticism was understated but explicit from the Cultural Centre project leaders in a public information session held last Thursday. KIERAN FINNANE reports with additional reporting by ERWIN CHLANDA.

UPDATE 2:10pm

Mayor Damien Ryan told the Alice Springs News Online that personally he favours the Anzac site for the Indigenous art gallery and the relocation of the rugby codes to Bradshaw Drive.
